Jottings

BIG UPDATE: We just got our awesome, new, super-sexy Ford Fiesta delivered today!!! Am typing this after going to the temple and the beach in it!! Woo!!! Go Fida!! :D

A lot of things have happened in recent times. I didn't seem to be able to sustain a whole post on any of them.... :P

1. First, a BIG welcome to Soumi who’s started her blog this week. She’s a terrific writer and I’m sure her blog is gonna be one of the more popular ones. Go Girl!! :)

2. One of the supposedly “major” exams, the AIEEE, made its exit out of the exam schedules this week, with students hoping that their answer scripts would somehow self-combust.

3. That done, student community is left with BITSAT and TNPCEE, both of which they hope will write themselves.

4. Pramod Mahajan, BJP General Secretary, shot thrice at point-blank range by his brother Pravin Mahajan, died today after battling against death for 12 days. For more scoop, catch this.

5. With Elections in Tamil Nadu a mere 5 days away, campaigns are going strong with all parties (except may be Lok Paritran) pulling out all stops – free rice, colour TV’s, free basic amenities…et al. For more scoop, catch this and this.

6. Freakspace achieves a record for itself. 63 comments on this post and 78 comments on this one – highest yet on this blog thanks mostly to FreakLord and Sagaro. :D

7. David Blaine, celebrated illusionist, lowers himself into a sphere of water and intends staying submerged for a week. Thereafter, he’ll try his hand at the World Record for holding breath underwater. The current record is 8 minutes 58 seconds. Blaine hopes to make that 9 minutes. His most famous stunt was the 44 days he spent in a glass box suspended above the river Thames.

8. Weather in Chennai seems to have confused itself. It, seemingly, has initiated an exchange program with Weather in Africa. Or may be it just discovered Thermal Equilibrium. Temperatures here seem to be raising the mercury and a lot of tempers beyond endurance.

9. Kaavya Viswanathan, episodical literary marvel and Harvard sophomore, was found appropriating passages from two authors – Megan McCafferty and Sophie Kinsella – in her book How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild and Got a Life. Her publishers have withdrawn her whopping $500,000 two-book contract and Dream Works have dropped the rights to an How Opal… movie. I’m sure she dreamt of her work flying off the shelves – but not like this!

10. Much awaited release of Gautam’s Vettaiyadu Vilayaadu is postponed once again from May 5 to May 12. Damn!! For more scoop, catch this.

A field day for cross-linking. Yay!! :)

Neat Update!Congrats on your Ford Fiesta!!

You guys are still having exams??????

And yeah, totally agree on the weather bit, but somehow it hasn't been ALL that bad the past few days!!

Go Amma!!!!:D:D:D

And blow Kaavya Vishwanathan, whatever said and done, and however hot that woman is, it was abusing the art and unacceptable!!!!!

S said...

@hamsini:
thanks!! :)

and abt kaavya - roger that!!! :D

Anonymous said...

@Hamsini:
Read opal mehta and then you might have a change of mind...

The plot is entirely different. So is almost everything except for 22 paras. And what more, the 22 paras dont even in any way affect the plot. Lets take shostakovich - considered a great music composer till date... he internalized 15 seconds of Ludwig Van... and people dont call it plagiarism nor do they call it abusing an art. Its called quoting. Why? for that matter havent you read novels which quote shakespear... If you want a list of books which took stuff from shakespear search wikipedia... there are a ton books and cant quote them all here... And on that note, salman rushdie who was harsh on Kavya, in many of hsi books quoted Shakespear and Issac Asimov... His verdict is totally unacceptable...

Just that sloppy first's author is a third rate author and thought this was the best way to make money...

When you write a fiction, you set up a background, a theme, a land, a situation... now one of the para which is common to both those guys says "there were 170 shops on the street.. bla bla". Well it just means Kavya's fictional land borrows from an already exsisting fictional land... which is totally acceptable...

And I wouldnt miss a book as good as opal (which unlike sloppy firsts managed to climb the amazon charts) just becas I am prejudiced against Kavya and her beauty :P

And Sureksuha:
Spell errors were made on purpose :p

S said...

@sagaro:
you don't ever give up do you??! :)

and watz with you and ludwig van and rossini and shostakvich??!! :O

and FYI, when quoting/taking instances/passages/whatever people generally have something called an ACKNOWLEDGEMENT in their books. Kaavya's book has NONE. and that therefore is PLAGIARISM and not merely QUOTING!! :O

and btw itz not just 22 paras and sloppy firsts - its over FORTY paras and Megan McCafferty(sloppy firsts), Meg Cabot(Princess Diaries), Salman Rushdie AND Sophie Kinsella!!! :O :O

and to see just HOW similar the paras are, i suggest u google 'em and read!! :)

and NO ONE is prejudiced against her beauty - shez hawt alrite!! but tatz no excuse for wat she's done!! :)

and bleddy you!!!! itz SURAKSHA!!!!!! :O :O :O

Anonymous said...

bloody hell!!! 39 comments for this post sigh!!! kaavya isnt good looking(i have willed myself not to insult tha word 'hawt') for heavens sake....

Anonymous said...

@S:
Well when you quote a great work of art you dont acknowledge it. for instance Salaman rushdie didnt acknowledge Shakespear in his book, nor did he acknowledge Isaac Asimov. Again Shostakovich didnt Acknowledge Ludwig Van... But here Sloppy Firsts is not a great piece of art... point taken. But still if it were a great work of literature then it was ok for Kavya to quote it...

Ok lets assume, tomorrow I come up with a book called Hagrid. I set the stage of harry potter era. Well since JKR is so famous now, I dont have to put it in my acknowledgement pages. I can directly lift some passages from the book for instance the once discribing the castle etc etc. But not the plot.

Why do you peeps care about the wrapper and not the chocolate inside it... The plot has nothing to do with the rest of the books... the 40 paras (FYI I have read all of them) dont even affect the plot by a kilometer.

BTW the Ludwig Van and Shostakovich is just to show that art can internalize... and still be great.

@Anin:
Lol

S said...

@sagaro:
but u said it urself - itz not a great piece of literature!!

anyway...catch today's literary review in the hindu...some more controversies seemed to have stemmed! :D

Anonymous said...

@S:
Courier me the paper :p
I stopped buying The Hindu. IE is far better. They do investigative journalism, unlike Hindu... And another reason is they have Amit Verma, Mir Ehsan, Varghese George...etc... those peeps' reports are brilliant...

And also they are not biased to DMK... After that N.Ram arrest warrent, Hindu is talchoking AIDMK... Not that I am an AIDMK supporter...but still its a hopeless paper.

Paddyman said...

huh..so when did lifting 44 paras come under "quoting" ??! I must say, that would have been one long quote.

And 40 paras in a book that dont affect the plot ? Some book...

And well no one might stop you from lifting from other authors' works..its just your originality quotient which might suffer a bit. Being paid half a million for that is cool though.

Oh and Im also interested, what about the "unintentional quoting" or whatever she tried to cover up with ?

Copying is bad. Getting caught red-handed is worse. Not admitting even after all this is...well it just shows god was a lot less liberal with the grey matter with you.

And anin i agree with you, she isnt "hawt" !!

S said...

@paddy:
ROGER THAT!!!!!! :D

finally someone who can see sense!! :)

Anonymous said...

@paddyman:
Well 44 paras in a book is nothing. you know the blurb of the book is enough to coastline the plot. Sheesh... Plot is very small machan. The rest of the paras just create a story around the plot. For instance paras which talk about the description of the room doesnt by any chance affect the plot. And over here the plot is unique... not the plot of sloppy firsts.

And dont give me bull about you hate the book cauze she copied 44 paras. Get a life, all movies are like that... they copy from some old english movie... And you pay 100 bucks and go watch it...even though the plot is same. Here atleast the plot is different.

Go read it first da.

@sagaro:
there's this not-very-hep girl, she needs to get a life, she does get a very cool social life and then goes back to her frumpy clothes n what not and the "plot" ends on a whole feel-good-about-whoever-you-are note!!

wow....so unique!!! i swear i've never heard of this before!!
